Ce jour là, avec mon ami V-Drums (Vivien Vanoirbeek) qui avait depuis peu un magnifique piano éléctronique droit Roland avec séquenceur 16 pistes incorporés, nous nous étions mis à la tâche de tester la bête et enregistrer la musique de notre ami, guitariste et également soundtracker Laurent Mazzapicchi dit Parmesan. Nous avions donc retravaillé son « Outer Space » en lui donnant un petit goût de Dance MIDI, ajoutant du saxophone et quelques petites séquences de piano à la Robert Miles… Pour du MIDI, le résultat était plutôt sympa… Malheureusement, je n’ai pas l’impression d’avoir garder le fichier, peut intéresser à l’époque par ce format qui s’il sonnait bien sur ce gros piano éléctronique, avait peu d’intéret sur le Windows 3.11 de mon 80386 DX 40…. D’ailleurs, j’attendais sous peu l’arrivée de mon tout nouvel ordinateur… Un Pentium 120.

Bref, une fois de retour, et toujours tout notre travail en tête, je m’étais mis à refaire le travail sur mon Scream Tracker III, en y ajoutant histoire de plaire encore plus à Parmy, quelques sons de guitare. Histoire d’accorder tous les sons dont j’allais avoir besoin, j’avais trouvé une petite astuce. J’utilisais un son type Adlib qui me servait de note de référence.
Voilà encore une production qui pourrait se distinguer dans le magasine PC FUN ? …. et un petit coucou à mon ami Tentacle Bob (Valentin Boigelot)
That day, with my friend V-Drums who have just receive a very big electronical Roland’s piano with a 16 tracks onboard sequencer, we’ve planned to test it and recording a song from our friend, guitarist and soundtracker Parmesan. We worked on Outer Space adding it a Dance MIDI mood with saxophone parts and also Trancy Robert Mile’s like piano… For a MIDI creation, that sounded great. Unfortunatly i probably will not keep the MIDI file as at that time, that was not intersting on my Windows 3.11 running on my 80386 DX 40… I was hardly waiting my brand new computer, a Pentium 120 !
So well, back at home and still the song in mind, i re-tracked it on Scream Tracker III adding some guitar parts to be sure Parmy like it ! To help according all the samples i was using a ADLIB reference instrument 😉

track 2, Gimme an Amiga (1996-2012)
Parmi une série de nouveaux jeux shareware trouvés ces derniers jours, se trouvait un Astéroïd-like en VGA sous MS-DOS, plutôt sympa, et proposant des sons digitalisés… Astrofire… Il n’en fallait pas plus pour donner envie de lui imaginer une bande son. Voici donc l’une de mes premières musique de jeu, sauce Shoot’m up ! C’est également ma première production en stéréo ! Tentant d’exploiter cette nouvelle option offerte par mon changement de carte son… Même si clairement, à l’époque mon ordinateur avait toute les peines de monde à tenir la route dans ce mode !
Among new sharewares i’ve found those days, there was a VGA asteroid-like under MS-DOS, funny and with digitalized sounds called Astrofire. I didn’t need more to imagine it an sound-track for that game. So here is my first shoot’m up music production. Also my first stereo production ! I was trying to use the new potential of my brand new sound card… As if at that time, my computer have lof of difficulties to work in that audio mode.
En 1994, l’Euro Dance Music prend clairement de l’ampleur et 2 Unlimited n’est plus seul à représenter ce style de musique, ils sont rejoints par des groupes tel que 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, Twenty 4 Seven, Ice Mc, Culture Beat ou encore… MAXX. Cette formation Allemande va lancer un nouveau tube, relayant le Mr Vain de Culture Beat dans les armoires, il s’agit de Get A Way.
De mon coté, j’ai encore bien du mal à pouvoir proposer des remixs de musiques poussé, car le petit processeur de mon ordinateur, cadencé à 40mhz et surtout le peu de mémoire embarquées — 1mo — ne permet pas vraiment de pousser plus loin. C’est que pour mettre un morceau de musique sur ordinateur, à l’époque, on ne fait pas ripping MP3 !! Sur ma machine, je n’ai accès qu’à du .VOC en 22.000 hertz, et quelques secondes au plus. Me vient alors l’idée de digitaliser des loops que je ferais tourner au besoin en boucle pour tenter de recréer un morceau de 3 minutes, en travaillant sur la structure. C’est de ce concept que part le projet de ce Get A way, au départ du Maxi CD de mon ami Vivien Vanoirbeek.
Pour la petite histoire, si ce premier titre de MAXX fut un tube, la suite fit plutôt un bide. Le titre No more était trop proche du premier, et au fond déjà très proche de Mr Vain et I Can’t stand it, n’avait déjà plus grand chose à voir. Les autres singles sont d’ailleurs pour moi totalement inconnus. Le producteur de MAXX a par la suite produit le groupe Real Mc Coy. Boris Kohler, le chanteur – rappeur avait par contre au préalable participé au projet Snow – Informer !
In 1994, the Euro-Dance music began to invade all the charts not only with 2 Unlimited but also with new formation as 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, Twenty 4 Seven, Ice Mc, Culture Beat… or MAXX. This new german team launched a new hit better than Culture Beat – Mr Vain, called : Get a Way.
I still would like to realise my own remix, but my small computer with just 40mhz processor and 1mo of memory will not enought for that. As just listening music on it is not easy, as we don’t have CD-Rom player, and the MP3 will not arrived. I’ve just able to record .VOC files on 22khz and only few seconds. So i had the idea to digitalize some loo that i’ll use to rewrite a 3 minutes songs, working on order structure. That was my concept of that Get A Way project.
For the story, if this first song of MAXX was a HIT, the other one will have no succes. No More was too close of the first song… but also from Mr Vain and I Can’t Stand It was too different from the MAXX spirit. About the two other singles , i had never heard it before today, as if the last one « Move your body » let me think to another formation from 96 : The Outhere Brothers. MAXX producer also work for Real Mc Coy and Boris Kohler the singer/rapper also have worked before MAXX project on Snow – Informer.

L’année 1995 touchait clairement à sa fin, et dans un dernière élan je mettais à la tâche, un peu le réveillon familliale à réaliser un mégamix de mes 2 CDs dernièrement acheté. C’est le Turn up The Bass 22 qui passa le premier dans Fast Tracker II afin de récupérer les premiers samples. Pensez donc, ce n’était pas aussi simple que maintenant, il n’y avait pas de fichier MP3, et je ne pouvais pas non plus importer un morceau complet en .WAV sur mon ordinateur. Mon disque dur de l’époque était un 40mo ce qui n’était déjà pas mal pour l’époque.
Bref, il me fallait repéré sur ma chaine Hi-Fi Sanyo l’endroit que je voulais sampler, reculer un peu en arrière, brancher alors un cable dans la sortie casque de ma chaine HiFi vers l’entre audio de la carte son, et enregistrer à l’aveugle quelques secondes… Puis recouper dans Fast Tracker II ce que je voulais garder.
Dans ce megamix j’utilisais donc des sons de : Lil’ Louis – Club lonely, P. Fernandez – Kickin the beat, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam – Let beat hit them, Ultra Nate – A deeper love, Jam & Spoon – Stella – Precious X Project – Dukkha.
Year 1995 was close to be finished and so, i try to realised 2 megamix before the familly dinner. I choose the vol. 22 of my both Turn up up the Bass first. I should explain you how i worked at that time to prepare the sounds of my megamix on Fast Tracker II.
At that time, we don’t have MP3 files, nor the possibility to import the song in a .WAV file on my computer, as my hard drive only have 40mo, that was not so bad for that time.
So i should prepare the timing of the sample i need to record from my Sanyo CD player and then go few secondes reward. Then plug a cable on the headphone output and then also in the audio input of my sound card. Then i should blindly record few seconds and then crop it with Fast Tracker II.
In this mix i use sounds from Lil’ Louis, P. Fernandez, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Ultra Nate, Jam & Spoon and Precious X Project.
